Comets swept over weekend
The Cottey College Comets traveled to St. Louis over the weekend to play three opponents in three doubleheaders in three days. Cottey had a tough weekend as they fell to Mineral Area Community College on Friday, 0-10 and 1-16, to St. Louis Community College-Meramec on Saturday, 0-16 and 2-10, and to St. Louis Community College-Forest Park on Sunday, 3-14 and 2-7.
If the Comets could avoid the big inning, they would be extremely competitive in their games. Against Mineral Area, the Comets gave up six runs in the second inning of the first game and 11 runs in the first inning of the second game. Take those two innings away and the Comets are in tight 0-4 and 1-5 games.
It was the same story against Meramec as Cottey gave up six runs in the first inning and eight runs in the fourth inning of game one and six runs in the fourth inning of game two.
The second game against Forest Park was one that got away, however, as Forest Park scored all seven of their runs in the first inning. The Comets held them scoreless after that. It was the first time in several games that Cottey played all seven innings instead of a shortened "run-rule" game and showed improvement on the part of the Comets.
The losses dropped the Comets to 0-14 on the season. The next home games for Cottey will be on Thursday, April 14, when they play two against Allen County Community College. The first game will begin at 2 p.m. The Comets play their home games at Bushwhacker Field at Lyons Stadium.
