Elks Lodge to host forum on parks sales tax

The Nevada Elks Lodge No. 564 will host a public forum to discuss issues regarding the continuation of the 1/2-cent Parks Sales Tax ballot issue, at 6 p.m., June 29, in the Nevada Elks Bingo Hall behind the Elks Lodge at 510 N. Centennial Blvd.

The forum will be conducted as a question-and-answer period to address voter concerns about the proposed renewal of the 1/2-cent sales tax for city of Nevada parks and recreation, to be put before voters on the Aug. 2 ballot.

If approved by voters, this sales tax will continue to dedicate 1/2-cent to local parks maintenance. The measure also would permanently roll back the parks property tax levies.

Here's the official ballot language: "Shall the City of Nevada be authorized to eliminate the expiration date for its existing Local Park Sales Tax of one-half of one percent (.005%), use the sales tax moneys collected for the improvement, operations, and maintenance of local parks of the City, and deposit all funds collected each year to the Parks Fund solely for these purposes?"

I still want to know why we are wasting money on a special election for a tax that doesn't expire for 3 years.

Sam, If I am not mistaken, and I sometimes am because I am a male... Anyway! It is because if the City can show they have a solid and reliable income, the parks tax, then they can stop shifting money from the general fund and use that as stable income to show the banks to get other projects rolling. If they wait, then projects will be delayed. Trust me, we need it to pass.

I agree. If the city can get a loan for the a new building now with the interest rates so low it would save a bunch of money. You have to think interest rates are going to start going up in the future. Plus, those buildings are so old and cost so much to maintain, it probably will cost the city less to hold the special election then to continue fixing these buildings for three more years.

See you Wednesday evening at the Elks howitzer! That would silence your critics, and show you are actually a person who wants to see progress. Of course, you will need to do something so we all know who you are, perhaps wear a shirt with a howitzer on it. See you there buddy, we can even have a drink in the lodge afterwards!

You got it, I will drive an unmarked Suburban, and the signal will be me chewing a piece of gum. It would be nice if you ask me if I would like a Pepsi (Spys Like Us). I found out this morning I may have another meeting at the same time as the forum, so I too may miss it.
