Deerfield teen killed in weekend crash
A one vehicle accident which happened just before midnight on Saturday, June 25, in rural Vernon County, has left a Deerfield teen dead and a Nevada man with minor injuries.
According to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Hunter M. Koenig, 16, of Deerfield, lost control of the 2003 Jeep Liberty he was driving westbound on Lady Road seven miles west of Nevada. The report said the vehicle left the roadway and overturned multiple times, ejecting Koenig. Koenig was transported by helicopter to the Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, where he was pronounced dead. Koenig was not wearing a safety belt.
A passenger in the vehicle, Charles E. Steele, 19, of Nevada received minor injuries and was transported to the Nevada Regional Medical Center. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol's online traffic crash reports, Steele was wearing a safety belt at the time of the accident.
