CLINTON -- The season-opener couldn't have gone much better for the Nevada High School softball team.
The Tigers began the 2011 season with a dominating 11-0 win over Clinton on Monday afternoon. The game ended after the fifth inning due to the run-rule.
"The girls played excellent," Nevada Coach Tammy Holcomb said.
Nevada junior pitcher Christian Novak threw a no-hitter and got the win on the mound for the Tigers. Novak struck out 10 and allowed just one walk.
The Tigers didn't waste much time getting on the board, scoring five runs on five hits in the first inning.
Nikki O'Bryan singled to start the game against Clinton starting pitcher Riley Cook. After Mackenzie Pritchett lined out, a throwing error allowed O'Bryan to take second. Olivia Culbertson then hit an RBI double to get the Tigers on the board. Tiffani Long then hit an RBI double of her own to make it 2-0. Tori Dahmer then followed with an RBI double to center and it was 3-0.
Next, Ashley Shumaker walked and Casey Barker hit an RBI double, putting Nevada up 4-0.
Victoria Culbertson hit a sac fly to make it 5-0 before JaLynn Heckadon was retired to end the inning.
Nevada extended its lead in the second. O'Bryan walked and later came home on a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Dahmer hit an RBI double, scoring Long from first for a 7-0 cushion.
O'Bryan drove in Barker with an RBI single in the third, giving Nevada an 8-0 advantage.
A Clinton throwing error allowed two runs to score in the fourth. Dahmer and Shumaker both crossed the plate, and the runs gave Nevada a 10-0 lead. Next, O'Bryan hit an RBI triple to right, scoring Victoria Culbertson for the 11-0 cushion.
On the other hand, Novak cruised inning after inning on the hill for the Tigers. She struck out the side in the third and the fifth innings.
