CARL JUNCTION -- Cold and windy conditions greeted players on Thursday morning at the Carl Junction Invitational girls golf tournament at Briarbrook Country Club and Golf Course.
The shorthanded Nevada Tigers finished fifth in the team standings.
"It was a rough day," Nevada Coach Brian Leonard said. "I don't think it ever got to 60 degrees and there were some strong winds, too. The girls aren't used to playing in such cold, windy weather. I think the cold really affected all the girls from all the teams."
Nevada senior Morgan Turner led the way for the Tigers with a 100 (51-49). Her score was good for fifth place overall.
Also for Nevada, Hannah Householder shot a 111 (57-54), Danielle Smith finished with a 124 (57-67) and Myra Ornelas shot a 129 (67-62). Maddie Johnson finished with a 136 (66-70).
Carl Junction's Paige Drummond turned in the best score on Thursday, shooting a 92 on her home course.
Joplin won the team title, edging Carthage by one stroke, 419-420.
Nevada played without junior Emmaly Ellis, who is out with an injury. Ellis has been the team's best player all season.
Leonard said Ellis was treated by the school's trainer this week and was scheduled to visit her local doctor on Thursday.
"It's not as bad as I thought it could be," Leonard said. "It's not a rotator cuff injury. It sounds like a strain in the trapezius muscle. We're hoping she can play next week or at least the following Monday (Sept. 26) at our home match."
Nevada will compete at the Carthage Tournament on Monday at 8:30 a.m.
"We're hoping to get the scores down on Monday," Leonard said. "And hopefully, Emmaly will be back soon."
