El Dorado teens arrested on animal abuse charges
El Dorado Springs police officers on Dec. 28, responded to 901 S. Grand St. in El Dorado Springs concerning a report of animal abuse. The investigation revealed that four goats were left on the softball field of the El Dorado Springs R-2 School.
Two of the goats were dead when officers arrived, apparently due to physical injuries, according to a press release.
One of the surviving goats was euthanized at the scene due to injuries, and the fourth was transported to the city pound facility where it was treated for its injuries. One goat displayed an ear tag with the No. 14 and another with the No. 10. Additional information obtained in the investigation revealed a deceased piglet located in a dumpster and the cause of death appeared to be physical trauma. A report of a dead coyote placed on a motor vehicle was also taken, the press release stated.
The press release from the El Dorado Springs Police Chief Jarrod Schiereck also said, "animal abuse and theft are serious crimes and I encourage anyone with information to contact the police department.
"I would also encourage any owners that have goats as livestock to please check them closely. Pictures of the goats will be available at the Police Department for owners to view for identification purposes. These pictures are evidence in this crime and will not be released at this time."
Officers continued to investigate the incident and on Jan. 3, law enforcement arrested Joshua A. Markus, 17, of El Dorado Springs, charging him with ordinance violations of animal abuse, tampering with a motor vehicle, trespassing, livestock running at large and solid waste prohibited. Markus was released on summons pending a court appearance.
On Jan. 4, officers arrested Hunter D. Harper, 18, and Tyrel C. Parsley, 18, both of El Dorado Springs, charging them with ordinance violations of animal abuse, tampering with a motor vehicle, trespassing, livestock running at large and solid waste prohibited.
Both men were released on summonses pending court appearances. Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman said charges are pending in Vernon County Circuit Court.
Efforts to identify the owners of the animals continue.
The surviving goat was adopted by a local farmer, who also provided hay for the animal while it was housed at the El Dorado Springs City Pound.
