In a disposition hearing held Monday in a Vernon County Court, the Humane Society of Missouri received permanent custody of 16 horses and two donkeys rescued Jan. 6 from the Tom Reardon property near Milo, Mo. When rescuers arrived on the property, one of the horses was near death and lying on the ground. A horse that rescuers named Tumbleweed was too weak to stand and had to be loaded onto a sled (above) to be placed in the transport vehicle. Tumbleweed received four days of intensive treatment at an equine veterinary hospital before the horse was strong enough to be taken to HSMO's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch to complete its recovery.

"We are very pleased the judge made the decision to allow these suffering animals to continue receiving the care they need at HSMO's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and that the owner did not contest the decision," said Debbie Hill, vice president of Operations for the Humane Society of Missouri. "We are recommending prosecution to the fullest extent of the law and are providing the Vernon County Prosecutor's Office all relevant information and evidence concerning the condition of the animals."

As many of the animals as possible will be made available for adoption. Due to their poor condition, it may be many weeks before they will be available, a press release said. Interested adopters should visit the Longmeadow website www.longmeadowrescueranch.org to view all adoptable horses and farm animals. So far, no charges have been filed in the case.
