NHS golf: First for first time in years

NEOSHO -- For the first time in at least a decade, the Nevada High School boys golf team earned a tournament title.
"We had quite the day," Coach Brian Leonard said. "I was very pleased."
Joseph Ferry's second place finish led the way as the Tigers took first place at the Neosho Invitational on Monday. Leonard said the first place team finish was the first the program has had in his eight years as coach.
"I know it has to be the first in about the last 10 to 12 years, too, " Leonard said. "It was a total team effort."
Ferry shot a 75 and finished second overall.
"Joseph had a very consistent round today," said Leonard.
Freshman Andrew Quitno also competed in the individual division and finished with an 81, good for fifth place. He tied for fourth but took fifth on a tie-breaker. The best ball team of Taylor Handly and Elijah Solidum finished with a 90 and placed sixth out of eight teams. The scramble team of Keegan Bell and Lucas Denman combined for a 79, earning the duo third out of eight teams.
Other teams competing at Neosho were Aurora, Diamond, Jay, Mac County, Purdy, Thomas Jefferson and Seneca.
The Tigers compete at Carthage today against the hosts and Joplin. Tee times start at 4 p.m. Leonard said the nine-hole event will be a good measuring stick for his team.
