NEVC honors athletes with banquet

WALKER -- Northeast Vernon County High School held its annual athletic awards banquet on Wednesday night. The school's coaches recognized their respective athletes and handed out several awards.

Grant Davis was named Male Athlete of the Year and Payton Hays was the Female Athlete of the Year.

Coach Brian Sprouse handed out awards to his girls and boys basketball teams. For the girls team, the Committed Player Award went to Mikelah Moyer, while the Best Supporting Player award went to Haley Hays. Karliegh Conner was the Freshman of the Year and Morgan Haddix received the Comeback Player of the Year. Camille Buttorff was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Christanne Middleton received the Defensive Player of the Year award. Buttorff was also recognized for earning all-conference honors. Payton Hays was named Most Valuable Player. For the boys basketball team, Jacob Maus received the Committed Player Award and Mitchell Longstreth received the Team Player award. Richard Lyness was named the Offensive Freshman of the Year, while Jayson Owsley was Defensive Freshman of the Year. Freshman Drue Hoagland received the Defensive Player of the Year award.

Davis, Jacob Bell, Cody DeOrnellis and Tanner Stutzman shared the Most Valuable Player award. Davis, Stutzman and Bell were recognized for being all-conference. Sprouse noted the team won 17 games this year. The team had won 17 games in the three previous seasons combined. Davis was also recognized for becoming the school's all-time leading scorer. (Look for more on Davis tomorrow). Softball Coach Rick Wagner handed out letters to the team, but did not give out individual awards. Baseball coaches Jeremy Barger and Brian Pommier handed out numerous awards. Taylor Highfill received the Rising Star and Gold Glove awards, Dallas Bugg received Most Improved, DeOrnellis was named the Brick Wall Award winner, while Davis received Cy Young, Silver Slugger and MVP awards. Also, Spencer Hoagland and Davis were honored as U.S. Army Scholar Athletes, and Misty Bogardus recognized the cheer and dance teams.
