RICH HILL, Mo. -- Appleton City held off a fourth-quarter rally and edged the Tigers of Rich Hill by a final score of 22-20 Friday night, spoiling the Tigers' homecoming game.
The Bulldogs led 14-0 at the half after a pair of Garrett Wade touchdown runs. Rich Hill pulled within eight at 14-6, midway through the third quarter when sophomore quarterback Jacob Thompson connected with senior Josh Robb for a 71-yard touchdown pass.
The Bulldogs responded with a touchdown run by Michael Doody to extend the lead to 22-6 after three quarters before Thompson threw touchdown passes to Geoffrey Cumpton and Robb during the final 12 minutes of the game. The sophomore quarterback ran for a two-point conversion after Cumpton's touchdown, but was stopped just short of the end zone after Robb's second touchdown with 3:18 to play in the game.
Thompson completed 11 of 14 passes for 210 yards in the loss, which dropped the Tigers' record to 0-3 on the year.
The Tigers are scheduled to take on the Blackhawks of Adrian on the road this Friday, who are 1-2 after a 7-0 upset of Cass-Midway Friday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
