Douglas LaVerne Thompson
Douglas LaVerne Thompson, 52, of Iola, Kan., passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo.
Douglas was born Sept. 10, 1960, in Fort Scott, Kan., the son of Glenn LaVerne and Bernita June (Stine) Thompson. He grew up in Bronson until the family moved to Iola where he graduated from high school in 1977. He joined the United States Army and served three years including a year in Turkey before he was honorably discharged.
He returned to Iola where he worked for Gates Rubber Company from 1988 until 2005. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and 4-wheelers and attending stockcar races.
Survivors include his son, Kenneth J. Thompson and wife, Keshia, of Iola, Kan.; parents, Bernita and Jack Dawson of Iola, Kan.; sister, Sharon Roush and husband, George, of Carrollton, Mo.; grandson, Quintin Avery Thompson; nephews, Tyler and Brandon Roush; great-nieces, Mallory and Kirsten Roush
He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn LaVerne "Cap" Thompson; and grandparents, Millicent and Glenn Thompson and Mildred and Kenneth Stine.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 1, at the Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Chapel in Iola. Burial will be in Bronson Cemetery, Bronson, Kan., with memorial contributions to Bronson United Methodist Church.
Memorial gifts may be left with the Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
