CARTHAGE -- The Class 4, District 12 girls' basketball tournament opened Monday evening at Carthage High School.
Carl Junction defeated McDonald County by a final score of 51-35 in the first game of the night, while Carthage outscored Monett, 57-19, in the late game. Head coach Brent Bartlett's Nevada Lady Tigers earned the tournament's second seed and joined the top-seeded Webb City Lady Cardinals with a first-round bye.
With their opening-round wins, the Lady Bulldogs move on to face Webb City at 4 p.m., Thursday, and Carthage is to take on Nevada at 5:30 p.m., Thursday.
The boys' first-round games were scheduled for Tuesday, but the winter storm that swept across the area Monday night forced school officials to put a stop to those plans.
Thursday's schedule is now set to include the girls' semifinal games as scheduled, followed by the first-round games of the boys' tournament at 7 and and 8:30 p.m. The boys' semifinal games will be played on Friday, at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
The top-seeded Nevada Tigers under head coach John McNeley are slated to take on the winner of Thursday's opening-round game between Carthage and Monett, while the second-seeded Webb City Cardinals await the winner of the Carl Junction-McDonald County game. The championship games in both the boys' and girls' tournaments are scheduled for Saturday, at 1 and 2:30 p.m.
