Ramey grocery store to close

RPCS Inc., owner of Ramey Supermarket, 500 E. Cherry Street, announced late Thursday afternoon that the Nevada Ramey, as well as the Summer Fresh grocery store, 312 W. Highway 32 in El Dorado Springs, has been sold to Woods Super Market, which will be closing both stores.

A spokesperson for Ramey said Thursday she did not know at that time when Ramey would be closed.

"While we greatly appreciate the support we have received from the Nevada and El Dorado Springs communities, as well as our loyal shoppers, an opportunity to work with Woods on this transaction presented itself and we felt it made strategic sense for our organization," Erick Taylor, president and CEO of RPCS Inc. said in a prepared statement.

Taylor, added, "I'm pleased we were able to work with the Woods' organization as they too are an independent, locally owned grocer. I encourage Nevada and El Dorado Springs residents to patronize Woods as shopping with independent grocers enables dollars to stay within our local communities. We'll be discussing transfers of our Ramey and Summer Fresh associates to any of our other 46 stores with those employees wishing to remain with our company."

RPCS Inc. operates 39 stores in Missouri, six stores in northeast Oklahoma and one store in Baxter Springs, Kan.

"Change" as promised. Small business and small town America difficult sometimes to keep up with all the wonderful "Change".

Between the two stores it cost 101 jobs. I will never shop at a Woods store again.

I am not sure how one can be mad at a business for buying a business that is for sale.

It will really help the convenient stores North of Ramey's. And the new Caseys to the south. They had a lot of walk in business and those people will not want to walk to Woods or Walmart.

It's a shame when a business buys out a competitor and closes it down, just to eliminate the competition. This goes not only for grocery stores but for funeral homes, land title companies, or any others.

@ Leland Guant, I didn't realize it was that many jobs! But even to lose 10 jobs is 10 jobs too many in a place where there isn't alot of jobs to pick from in the first place!Rent a Center has sold to National TV Sales and Rentals, and those employees will also be unemployed. Wow, all in one week!

Well, for whatever reason they were sold, I stopped in last night & talked to a few of the workers there. They were totally blindsided by this, they are reeling from the shock & not knowing what to do next. These aren't just some high school kids with a part time job, these are parents who are supporting their families with this job. Now Rent a Center going out of business?? I'm not going to Casey's to buy milk on the way home from work, sorry, too expensive. I feel bad for employees who will be out of a job come Tuesday.

Rameys did this to the employees not Woods. They didn't want to buy the one in Nevada but Ramey/Price Cutter wouldn't sell the Summer Fresh location in El Do without them buying the inventory here. As somebody mentioned earlier they were closing the doors of Rameys within the next 12 months. This was going to happen. Dont penalize Woods over this, it wasn't their fault. We need to support our local grocery store while they last.

The biggest problem I have with Woods, is the attitude of their employees. They are just unfriendly. I have shopped in three different Woods stores and they are all the same. So it must come from the top. Without Woods buying the inventory, at least Ramey's employees would have had a job thru Christmas. The planned closing date was Jan. 1st. And does anyone remember that Woods bought out the discount grocer in Eldo and that building is still empty? Woods won't rent or sell it to anyone who might compete with them.

I don't blame Woods for making a business decision, but I also don't blame the citizens of a small town to be upset that it wasn't bought by someone who wants to keep the jobs, instead of close it down to an empty building on Austin Street. Potential businesses are going to see that empty building on the main drag and may think "It's a dying town, not starting a business here". My concern is jobs!

From the comments here, it seems that some of you think running a business in Nevada is a "service" to you. If an individual or company starts a business and decides to close it, yes, it's sad that jobs are lost, but that's how it works. For those of you saying you won't shop at Woods .. that's your choice but if enough people don't shop at Woods, they may close and then you'll have only Wal-Mart. I prefer Woods and have never found the employees at any of their stores where I've shopped to be unfriendly. I do feel very bad for the folks who are losing their jobs. There are so few jobs in Nevada and these closings aren't going to help things at all.
