The makeup of this year's Sheldon High School volleyball team is heavily youth-oriented, with seven of the team's 11 members being freshmen and sophomores.

While the team is short on experience, the players are exhibiting a strong work ethic and a good attitude, said head coach Lisha Lamb, herself a newcomer to the coaching ranks at the school.

"The girls have been working hard on their teamwork," said Lamb as she assessed her team's progress thus far. "It takes our team working together to bring out each other's greatest abilities. During our first game against Golden City, the girls began showing their abilities to come together and work hard as a team.

"Although our team is young, we have the dedication and abilities to succeed this year. Success doesn't always mean we will win every game, however. We will succeed in improving our skills and talents as the year progresses."

Making up this year's squad are senior setter Destiny Shelton, senior hitter and defender Chelsey Goodwin, junior hitter and defender Shaina Patrick, and junior hitter and defender Melissa Handle.

Sophomores include Logan Lamb, setter and hitter; Lindsay Turner, hitter and defender; Dani Hibbitts, hitter and defender; and Camie Ford, defender.

Freshmen on the team are Ceirin Cooper, hitter and defender; Carly Claflin, setter and hitter; and Kylie Seaton, hitter and defender.

The Lady Panthers opened the season with a two-set loss to Golden City by the final scores of 25-19 and 25-16.

The team's tri-meet scheduled for Thursday at Bronaugh was moved to Friday. Sheldon returns to action Monday, at Lakeland.
