Davis appointed Western Missouri 911 director
A new partnership between the Vernon County Sheriff's Office and the Vernon County Ambulance District began in early July, putting trained medical personnel on the special weapons and tactics team, every time it is called out. Sheriff Jason Mosher and VCAD Director James McKenzie are both excited to be part of a good working relationship that will serve the public better. McKenzie said the sheriff has been "very proactive" in the formation of the partnership to form a joint team.
The annual Vernon County Youth Fair was held July 9-13, with many local youth entering livestock and projects for judging. Winners from the VCYF would continue on to the State Fair, held in Sedalia, Mo.
Early July also saw the city of Nevada approving an ordinance requiring people to have dogs on a leash while in the parks and prohibiting dogs in playground areas of the parks.
The Nevada City Council unanimously approved, during its meeting on July 9, the second reading of a general ordinance requiring dogs to be on a leash while in city parks. The council voted 4-0, with council member Jayne Novak excused from the meeting. The Nevada Parks Board brought the matter before the city council and proposed the ordinance after receiving numerous complaints from people who were concerned about their safety with dogs running loose in the parks.
In neighboring Schell City, the board of aldermen met on July 3, and approved the installation of a water pressure reducer in the city park as part of the city-wide water improvement project. The board had previously, in June, approved several ordinances financing the connection to Consolidated Public Water Supply District No. 1, of Vernon County.
The Bronaugh city Board of Aldermen also made changes in July 2013. Changes were made involving sewer caps and fees in early July. Property owners must cap their sewer lines now, if they don't want to pay sewer fees.
In July, Vernon County was one of several Missouri counties included in a letter from the state's congressional delegation, urging President Obama to approve Gov. Jay Nixon's July 3 request for a major disaster declaration. On July 19, President Barack Obama declared a major disaster for Missouri. All but three counties -- Vernon, Cedar and Pettis -- included in Gov. Jay Nixon's July 3 disaster request made the final cut.
Local mainstay, White Grill, celebrated 75 years in business in late July. Former employees were invited to relive their past job experience on July 20. The small diner is known for hosting a variety of notable people throughout its history, including Harry Truman and Gerald Ford's daughter, Susan Ford.
Tonia Davis, who had been acting director of the Western Missouri 911 Dispatch Center since March 2013, was given the job permanently, the center's board of directors announced in late July. The board voted unanimously to appoint Davis. Also in late July, the Nevada City Council announced they hired long-time city finance employee, Kristie Modlin, as the new city treasurer. The treasurer is one of three city employees hired directly by the city council. The other two are the city manager and the city clerk.
At the end of July, the Nevada City Council voted, 4-1, to approve a contract with Paul Miller Construction of El Dorado Springs for $373,633 to build a new clubhouse at the Frank E. Peters Municipal Golf Course.
