Northeast Vernon County students, PTO hold fundraiser to meet Harlem Globetrotters

In an effort to raise money for improving technology, Northeast Vernon County Parent Teacher Organization launched a not-so-traditional fundraiser March 3.
The PTO and students are selling discount tickets for the Harlem Globetrotters performance April 3 at Leggett and Platt Athletics Center on the Missouri Southern State University campus in Joplin with part of the proceeds going back to the NEVC school district.
"Our goal is to sell 1,000 tickets by March 25," Gina Ensor said. "After the game, the Globetrotters will present a check to NEVC. NEVC and El Dorado Springs students will also have a field trip to the Joplin area to spend time with the Globetrotters at a YMCA. They'll show some tricks and give a presentation on 'The ABCs of Bullying Prevention.'"
Ensor said every week the students in both the elementary and high school are having contests awarding prizes for the most tickets sold every week.
"Public schools get bare bones funding," she said, "and we don't have a large tax base, so we all have to pitch in to fill gaps in funding."
In addition to offering mid-level, upper-level or corner and end seats at discount, the first 50 people to purchase tickets through NEVC will get to meet the Globetrotters.
"They went above and beyond to try to help our small school," she said. "They'll even let our students sing the national anthem at the game."
Ensor said anyone interested in purchasing tickets or area schools wanting to get involved should contact her at 417-432-1056 or check out http://www.nevcpto.com/harlem-globetrotter-tickets.html.
