More than 100 people attended this year's Wax Museum display, "Y2K Does Wax: We Brought in the Millennium, While They Left Their Mark," Tuesday evening, at Nevada Middle School.
"This is a really fun experience," Katherine Pruitt, who portrayed Walt Disney, said. "I enjoy it. It's fun to learn about people. I get into character by putting on the costume and drawing a mustache. I feel we are less serious and sophisticated than some of the other historical figures. We give a more laid back vibe."
From historical figures such as Dwight D. Eisenhower and Winston Churchill to cultural icons like Madonna and Steve Irwin to scientists Edwin Hubble and Albert Einstein, 37 students spent hours researching, preparing display boards, practicing speeches that had to be two minutes or less, and dressing for the part.
"We've had to stay after school a lot," Grace Jackson who portrayed Charles M. Schulz said. "It's been very fun, and I hope people find us funny."
"As the Wax Museum teachers, we would encourage people to come because it's an excellent, creative way to learn about some very famous people and the impact they left on the world by coming in contact with them," accelerated social studies teacher Erin Townsend said in an email. "We invite the entire community to come and interact with our wax figures and witness all the hard work they've put into this project."
The Wax Museum started 29 years ago, as a cross-disciplinary project for students of accelerated language arts, accelerated science, and accelerated social studies. Students are involved in doing research for a multi-page paper and devising their own costumes, props, backdrops and oral presentations.
