Opal Jean (Kane) Righter
Opal Jean (Kane) Righter, 91, Nevada, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2014, at Christian Health Care, in Nevada, following a brief illness. She was born June 18, 1922, in Duquoin, Ill., to Valdie Jefferson Kane and Lillie Anna (Beers) Kane. She and Leonard "Pete" Righter were married on April 19, 1942, in East St. Louis, Ill., and he preceded her in death in 1985.
Opal and Pete raised seven children; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. They enjoyed celebrating their birthdays and other special occasions together. Opal worked for the Nevada State Hospital for more than 20 years. After retirement, she enjoyed her flower gardens, reading, and taking walks. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church her entire life, read her Bible daily, and lived by its word.
Survivors include her children, Leonard "Joe" Righter, Georgetown, Ohio, Barbara Lavell, Murrieta, Calif., Pat Jackson, Nevada, Dan Righter, Nevada, Diane Nicolaou, Traverse City, Mich., and Doug Righter, Golden City, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Velda Ogar, Mexico, Mo., and Geneva Miller, Caseyville, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Berta Hicks and Luella Meyer; one son, Peter Jefferson Righter; and one great-grandson, Zane Gardner.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, March 14, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. Abel Hagen officiating. Interment will follow in Deepwood Cemetery, Nevada. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 13, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made in her memory to the Nevada "Seventh Day Adventist Youth Group" in care of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
