Dorothy Lavella Hovey
Dorothy Lavella Hovey, 90, of Nevada, Mo., died at her home May 1, 2014. She was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Lucas, Iowa, the daughter of Leonard Augusta and Dolly Jane (Marker) Pottorff. She married Preston "Pete" Barr in 1941, and he preceded her in death in 1966. She married Claude Emrick in 1970 and he preceded her in death in 1989. She married Harlan Ray Hovey Aug. 24, 1994, in Benton County, Ark., and he survives of the home.
Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nevada. She moved to the Fort Scott area in 1938. She worked at Kress, Ben Franklin, and Bella Hess stores, and also baby sat for many years. Her love of children was amazing.
In addition to her husband, Harlan, she is survived by her son, Joe Barr and wife, Rita, of Fort Scott; three daughters, Marita Bigelow and husband, Galen, of Fort Scott, Charlene Keating and husband, John, also of Fort Scott, and Charlotte Stewart and husband, Alan, of Bronson, Kan.; daughter-in-law, Janice Barr, of Fort Scott; three stepchildren, Richard Hovey and wife, Delores, Wilma (Emrick) Hibdon, and Bill Emrick and wife, Margaret, of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Grace Hill, of Fort Scott, and Bertha Tobey, of California; 19 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and three on the way; and 15 great-great-grandchildren and one on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first two husbands; a son, Darrel D. Barr; two brothers, Calvin Pottorff and Olan Pottorff; and two sisters, Iva Bley and Vera Ogran.
The Rev. Hubert Fox will conduct funeral services 10 a.m., Monday, May 5, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, with burial following at the Fort Scott National Cemetery.
