Several athletes from each of the three athletics teams Cottey College fielded during last school year received awards at the school's annual awards ceremony, May 17.
Individual awards for the Comets basketball, volleyball and softball teams were announced by volleyball coach Marla Kannady Foreman, while softball coach Shelli Stanley handed out the awards. One of those groups was recognized as a team, as well, as the Comets volleyball squad finished with a 3.24 combined GPA -- the highest in program history.
The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award for the volleyball team was presented to both Kasey Hall and Regan Kannady, for sharing the team's best individual GPA. Both were on the President's List for both semesters and held a 4.0 GPA second semester.
Hall will also receive the Superior Academic Achievement award from the NJCAA. That award is for athletes who complete at least three semesters with a high GPA.
The Distinguished Leadership and Distinguished Student-Athlete Awards both went to Cassie Hale.
For the softball squad, Shirley Arreola-Kern got the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award, while the Distinguished Student-Athlete Award went to Selena Gochenour. Rachel McPherson and Christine Nevins shared the Distinguished Leadership Award.
For the basketball team, the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award went to Linsey Denny, while Hale earned the Distinguished Leadership Award. Caley Shaffstall and Casey Heger shared the Distinguished Student-Athlete Award.
