Nevada Middle School teacher Paula Shafer's summer school class visited the Daily Mail Friday morning to learn about careers in journalism, as well as the importance of reading, writing and using communication skills.

The summer school class, called "What Color Is Your Parachute?" after a book of the same title by Carol Christen and Richard N. Bolles, explored discovering yourself and defining your future. Students identified their favorite interests, best self-management skills, desired level of responsibility, ideal work environment, favorite types of people, ideal community, best transferable skills. The students took an online personality quiz to discover the color of their personalities and how to identify matching jobs. Students then took fieldtrips to the Nevada Police Department, Vernon County Ambulance Barn, Scotten's Goat Farm, Nevada Regional Medical Center and Nevada Daily Mail. Several guest speakers visited the classroom, including Leva Richmond from Arvest Bank, Sergeant Motamyers from the Marine Corps Recruiting Office, Dr. Brad Copeland and Jane Ann Hancock from Nevada Veterinary Clinic, Tom Mooney from 3M Human Resources and Elisha Ellis by video for Music Therapy in California. Shafer and her students would like to thank the community for investing in the lives of its students.
