Matt Resnick named as the Daily Mail sports editor
As the new sports editor of the Daily Mail, my top priority is providing readers with quality content and coverage of local and area sports teams and events.
"We're pleased to have him," Editor Ralph Pokorny said. "We're looking forward to expanding our local sports coverage, not just schools but community sports as well."
Previously, I spent nine months as a community/education reporter at the Fort Scott Tribune, covering the school district as well as Fort Scott Community College board meetings and other campus events.
I attended Shawnee Heights High School just outside of Topeka, and in 2008, graduated from Washburn University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media.
While at Washburn, I was a sports writer for the Washburn Review covering football, baseball, softball, men and women's basketball and volleyball.
Growing up, I primarily played baseball and basketball. Most of my baseball career was spent playing for various teams in Topeka at the Shawnee County Amateur Baseball Association (SCABA), as a left-handed pitcher and first baseman.
In 2011, I interned with the Kansas City Chiefs in the corporate sponsorship and sales department.
The sports teams I most closely follow, are: the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Kansas Jayhawks (basketball).
My favorite athletes are Andrew Wiggins, LeSean McCoy, Mike Trout, and Felix Hernandez.
Aside from watching sports and playing pickup basketball from time to time, I also enjoy participating in free fantasy football, baseball and basketball leagues.
So far while in Nevada, I have had the opportunity to cover several Nevada Griffons games, which I have thoroughly enjoyed.
Additionally, I look forward to covering fall and winter sports activities in Nevada, Bronaugh, Hume, Sheldon, and Northeast Vernon County.
I also look forward to working with the coaches, staff, and athletic directors of the respective teams in the area.
My parents, Danny and Joyce, currently reside in Topeka. However, my mom is from just north of Nevada. I became familiar with this area at a young age, taking many trips to visit my grandparents, Ray and Annetta Dean at their farm near Flight Lake.
I have two younger brothers, Brett and Alex, who both live in Nashville.
I'm excited to begin my journey at the Daily Mail, and want to thank Publisher Floyd Jernigan and Ralph Pokorny for this opportunity.
