Newton LeRoy Fossett
Newton LeRoy Fossett, 91, of Nevada, Mo., passed at noon Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at Moore-Few Care Center, in Nevada. He was born on June 26, 1923, near Bridgeport, Okla., to John Newton and Bessie (Starbuck) Fossett. He was united in marriage to Cleo "Bobby" Nell Shanklin on July 1, 1943, at his parents' home and she survives of the home.
LeRoy, as he was known, grew up in Hinton, Okla., where he attended school and graduated with the Class of 1942. After attending NYA School in Chickasaw, Okla., he moved to Hartford, Conn., and worked in the defense plant for about two years. He then moved back to the Oklahoma City area where he worked as a fire fighter at Will Rogers Field before it became an airport. He relocated once again back to Hinton and worked as a mechanic at Davison Ford Motors for more than seven years and served as Hinton's Volunteer Fire Chief from 1950-62.
Wanting to own his own business, he became owner and operator of Hinton Irrigation from 1957-62, after which he worked more than 20 years at J I Case Tractor and Implement based in Racine, Wis., while living in both Enid, Okla., and Nevada.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, in Nevada, for more than 20 years where he enjoyed singing in the Glory Choir and also assisted with many janitorial duties throughout the church. He enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking, spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Aside from his wife of 71 years, Cleo "Bobby", he is survived by his children, Dwight Fossett (Nancy), Spring Hill, Tenn., Harold E. "Boe" Fossett (Jeannie), Kingston, Okla., Pamela N. Fossett, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jama Bogart, Nevada; daughter-in-law, Ann Fossett, Enid, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jonathan Newton Fossett; one great-grandson; three sisters; and one brother.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
