When the city's infrastructure board adjourned its Oct. 1 meeting, it had voted to recommend the city council spend $428,120 of the $500,000 available for street construction in 2015.
On Wednesday the board met for the last time to finalize the 2015 project list and voted unanimously to recommend that the city council approve an additional four blocks of street construction at a cost of $70,313, for a total estimated cost of $498,433, leaving $1,567 for unanticipated costs.
The board also has a starting list of streets for the 2016 street projects
The projects the board is sending to the city council for its approval include: the 100 block of North Jefferson; 100 block of South Jefferson; 1000-1400 blocks of East Walnut; 200-400 blocks of North Elizabeth; 700 block of West Burton; 1000 and 1100 blocks of South Elizabeth; 700 block of Park Hill; 700 block of West South; Hillcrest in Valley Hi; 1000 block of West Pitcher; 200 block of North Tower and the 500 and 600 block of North Tower.
Money for these projects comes from a one-half cent transportation sales tax that is re-authorized by Nevada voters every five years. The sales tax generates about $700,000 each year, of which $500,000 is earmarked for new street construction. The remainder of the money goes for other street work, such as crack sealing and the annual sealing program that is used to extend the life of streets that do not need to be replaced.
The current transportation sales tax expires in June 2017.
