NMS seventh-graders carve up Joplin North, 59-0
The Nevada seventh-grade girls basketball team stayed scorching hot Monday night, pitching a 59-0 home shutout against Joplin North.
The win improves Nevada to 9-1 on the season.
However, Nevada head coach Danny Penn said his team still has room to improve.
"The score makes it look like we played better than we did," Penn said. "We struggled a little when we tried to run our offense and our free throw shooting still wasn't great (9-for-19).
"It was our first game after the Thanksgiving break so I expected a little rust, but we need to clean it up quickly before the Tri-County Tournament next week."
Nevada point guard Calli Beshore poured in a game-high 21 points, followed by Teagan Charles, who added 12.
"We did a nice job with our full court pressure," Penn said. "It led to some bad passes and easy layups for our wings. We did a nice job of making our layups tonight.
"When we stopped pressing, we stagnated a little offensively. There were a few times we had nice ball movement that resulted in open shots.
Penn said he was pleased with the offensive play of Charles.
"Teagan shot the ball well, especially from outside of her normal range," he said. "The ball came off her hand well tonight, something that she's been working hard on."
Nevada B-team rolls
The Nevada B-team also dominated, defeating Joplin North 42-3.
"We did a nice job of taking the ball to the basket and making our layups," Penn said. "Both Hailee (Lundine) and Lindley (Ferry) did a good job of finishing with their left hand around the basket.
Ferry finished with a game-high 12 points, while Lundine added 10.
With the win, the B-team moves to 7-1 on the season. The B-team concludes their season today at Fort Scott.
