Hume School plans on starting recycling program

With the start of the second semester of the school year on Jan. 12, the Hume School Board gave an update on the school and current projects at their first meeting of the year Thursday.
Principal Kirk Hart said the school will soon start a recycling program in order to teach students about the environment. Hume has already signed an agreement for a bin for collecting clothing and shoes. Bins will also be provided for the school to recycle trash in. The school will receive 5 cents per pound of clothing and shoes collected.
With the startup of classes and athletics, Hart said Hume's January schedule will become even busier with the homecoming activities that will conclude Jan. 23.
As the basketball season continues, the board looked ahead to the upcoming baseball and softball seasons. While 12-13 girls have committed to playing softball, only about eight boys were interested in baseball. If no other students show interest, the baseball season will be in question this year according to Hart.
Superintendent David Quick told the board he submitted a bid on a 1996 Chevy bus at the Rich Hill School District, per the board's instruction. The bus has 75,000 fewer miles than Hume's buses and good tires. Quick said he would know in the next couple weeks if the bid was accepted.
Quick also said he is in communication with a company in Rich Hill regarding a canvas curtain to be installed along the north walkway of the school building to protect students from bad weather. It would be rolled up during nice weather.
The enrollment grew by four students in January, increasing the total enrollment to 170 students, kindergarten through 12th grade. Quick told the board that the school's revenue for the year appears fine so far.
The board unanimously approved the decision to offer a contract to Quick for the position of superintendent for the 2015-16 school year.
