In Friday night high school basketball action, the Hume Lady Hornets drilled the Sheldon Lady Panthers, 53-33, while the Sheldon boys toppled Hume 55-42.
With the victory, the Lady Hornets improve to 10-4 (5-1, Golden Valley Vernon County Conference).
The girls game started out tight early, as the Lady Hornets led 10-8 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
Behind the point guard play of junior Brhett Mumma, the Lady Hornets began to pick up the offensive tempo in the second quarter.
Midway through the quarter, a drive and layup by Mumma put Hume up 20-10. Later, senior Hope Yarick's bucket increased the Lady Hornets lead to 12 with 2:24 remaining in the half.
Freshman Hannah Swickhamer's 12-foot jumper from the right-baseline capped a 14-2 run, putting Hume in front 24-10 with 1:38 to go in the half. Sheldon ended their scoring drought as two free throws from Leah Bogart went down just before halftime, cutting the Hume lead to 24-12.
"We pressed better and cut out the turnovers in the second quarter," Lady Hornets head coach Delayna Thompson said. "And we rebounded better in the second quarter."
At the half, Mumma led all scorers with 10 points, while Lady Hornets forward Megan Sutcliffe added six.
The Lady Panthers scored on their first possession of the second half, as a strong post move from 5-foot-7 forward Dani Hibbitts trimmed the lead to 24-14.
Later in the quarter, with the score 25-16, Hume stretched their lead back to 12 when Yarick drained a 3-pointer from the right corner.
After picking up the full court press, Mumma came up with a steal in the back court, drove to the basket and dished to Yarick, who finished off the layup from the left block, staking the Lady Hornets to a 30-16 lead, with 5:03 left in the third.
On Hume's next possession, Mumma continued to control the pace of the game, slashing into the lane, and whipping a pass to a cutting Yarick, who again finished at the rim, handing the Lady Hornets a 32-16 advantage with 4:40 to play in the third.
Forward Madison Cannon capped a 9-0 Hume run, after hauling in an offensive rebound, and going back up for the deuce, as Hume opened up an 18 point lead.
Sheldon snapped out of their offensive funk when junior Kylie Leveall stuck a trey from the right baseline, making the score 34-19 midway through the third quarter.
Yarick provided Hume with major offensive output, scoring 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter. Yarick continued to connect from deep, knocking down a three from the top of the key, giving Hume an 18 point edge at 37-19 with 3:15 showing on the clock.
With 1:48 to play in the third, Mumma led a fast break, finding Sutcliffe for the layup and a 39-19 lead.
Late in the fourth quarter, back-to-back coast-to-coast drives by Mumma, ballooned the Lady Hornet lead to 51-28.
For Hume, Mumma finished with a game-high 17 points, going 5 of 8 from the charity stripe. Sutcliffe ended the evening with 12, Cannon four, while Swickhamer and fellow freshman Malia McFredrick chipped in with two apiece.
Thompson said Mumma's versatility on the court is invaluable.
"It helps the team when you have someone of that size playing the point guard position ---- to where she can drive down the lane and make those contested shots," Thompson said of the 5-foot-8 Mumma, who is built like a forward. "And she's quick for her size, and very efficient."
Boys game
The Panthers opened up an early 12-3 lead after shooting guard Micah Swanson swished a triple from the left corner. Forward Cody Hicks followed up on Sheldon's next possession, with a short jumper, putting the Panthers up 14-3.
Hume answered with a quick 5-0 spurt, capped by Ryan Reno's straight-away 3-pointer, shaving Sheldon's lead to 14-8, late in the first quarter.
Sheldon went up 16-8 after point guard Jacob McCartney threaded a pass to forward Cody Hicks under the basket, for an easy lay-in.
Trailing 25-13 midway through the second quarter, Hume point guard Blake Lewis canned a jumper from the left baseline, cutting their deficit to 10.
Meanwhile, on the other end, Swanson extended Sheldon's lead back to 12, after hauling in his own missed shot, and going back up strong for the bucket. With 1:39 to play before intermission, Swanson drove in from the perimeter, dumping the ball off to sophomore Kaleb Martin, who finished, putting Sheldon up 29-15.
The Panthers led 32-17 at halftime, with the duo of Hicks and Swanson combining for 21 points.
Second half
The third quarter opened with the teams exchanging baskets, as Sheldon went up 34-19.
With 5:58 to play in the quarter, Hicks hit a cutting Swanson for the lay-in, and a 36-19 edge. Lewis was able bring Hume closer, after sticking a trey from the top of the key, making the score 36-22 with 5:34 to play in the third.
On Sheldon's next possession, Hicks continued to dominate the boards, chasing down a missed shot, and going back up with a short jumper, to put the Panthers up 38-22.
With 2:21 remaining in the third, Hicks, who had the ball deep in the post, kicked out to Swanson for a baseline trey, and a 45-23 lead. Sheldon led 47-30 after three quarters of play.
The fourth quarter didn't feature a lot of offense, as Hume outscored Sheldon 12 -8.
For Sheldon, Swanson and Hicks combined for 73 percent of the team's offensive production, scoring 20 points apiece. Hicks did most of his damage in the low-post, knocking down nine field goals, most of which came from close-range.
The victory improves the Panthers to 6-7 overall.
"We did some really nice things," Sheldon head coach Tyler Judd said. "Defensively, we took some plays off in the second half and kind of let them get back into it.
"Hume made some tough, contested shots. But our effort wasn't as consistent in the second half as it was in the first half."
Judd did take away some positives from the game.
"We moved the ball really well, made the extra pass, and ran the floor pretty well," he said. "We moved pretty well without the ball, and passed up a good shot to get a great shot. We didn't force many things offensively, which was good."
Judd said he was impressed with Hicks performance.
"He used his speed in the post," Judd said. "He did a good job of catching it down there and then facing up and using his lateral speed to get to the rim. And he finished well at the rim. He also scored a lot of points off the press and in transition."
Hume was led by Lewis, who ended the evening with 16 points, while Thornburg added 12. Hornets center Austin Sullins netted nine points.
The loss drops Hume to 2-11 (1-7, GVVC).
