James Leroy Cornell Sr.
James Leroy Cornell Sr., 68, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center, in Overland Park, Kan. James was born Feb. 28, 1946, in Stoney Point, Okla., to Bill S. and Della M. (Napier) Cornell. He was united in marriage to Artie Marie Dale on Oct. 11, 1966, in Stigler, Okla., and she survives of the home.
James served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1968 as a specialist in the HHC 2nd Bn(M) 50th Inf. 2nd Division in Fort Hood, Texas. He was an expert on the M14 Rifle. He served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966.
James was a member of VFW in Glendale, Ariz. He loved to share time with his family and especially his grandkids.
In addition to his wife, Artie, survivors include his children, Tina Tincher, Nevada, Carolyn Cornell, Nevada, James Cornell Jr., Nevada, Della Cornell, Nevada, Howard Cornell, Nevada, Lela Etter and Rick of Joplin, Brenda Berten and David of Nevada, and Robert Cornell, Rich Hill; 28 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings, Donna B. Dart, Betty S. Sapp, Lillie M. Reed, Johnny R. Cornell, Loyd Dale Cornell, Rosemary Blaylock, and Donnie Joe Cornell; and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. James was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Henry Ira Cornell and F. Jane Jones; son-in-law, Melvin Tincher III; and grandson, Conner Cornell.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Thursday, Feb. 5, at Ferry Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Fort Scott National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kan. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the funeral home.
