Hume Hornets pick up second victory
HUME ---- The Hume Hornets defeated the Miami Eagles 43-39, Jan. 20, picking up their second win of the season.
Hume led 11-9 after the first quarter and 18-12 at halftime. The Hornets were outscored 11-10 in the third quarter, and 16-15 in the final frame, as they edged the Eagles for the four-point win.
Hume head coach Justin Wehar said he was pleased with his team's effort.
"It was nice to get another win under our belts this season," Wehar said. "We were a step late on the defensive end several times ---- which allowed Miami to stay in the game by hitting several 3-pointers."
With Miami inching closer in the fourth quarter, Wehar said that his team remained poised.
"We were able to keep our composure and hang onto the lead, late in the fourth quarter," he said.
The Hornets connected on only 12 of 28 free throws.
"Although we shot poorly from the charity stripe, we were able to hit enough free throws to seal the win," he said.
For Hume, point guard Blake Lewis scored a game-high 20 points, to go along with five steals, two rebounds, and an assist. Lewis was 5 for 7 from the free throw line.
Hornets center Austin Sullins finished with 12 points, three rebounds, and a steal, while connecting on 4 of 10 free throws.
Hume shooting guard Dakota Thornburg chipped in with six points, 10 rebounds, and six steals. Rounding out the scoring for Hume, Chris Ahrens scored three, and Ryan Reno two.
The Hornets finished the night with 18 steals.
