Cottey drops pair to Stephens College

The Cottey Comets softball team fell to 0-4 on the young season, after dropping a pair of games to the Stephens College Stars, Tuesday afternoon at American Legion Park in Columbia.
The Comets were toppled in the first game of the twinbill 11-4, and were blanked in the second game 10-0.
Game 1 (7 innings)
The Comets grabbed an early 1-0 lead, when Kaitlyn Hill scored on a throwing error in the top of the first inning.
The Comets however, relinquished three runs in the bottom of the first inning, as Jessica Kane, Cheyenne Jones, and Katie Heaton each crossed the plate, giving Stephens a 3-1 advantage.
In the top of the second, Cottey's Shirley Arreola-Kern reached base on a bunt single, later coming around to score, slicing the Stars lead to 3-2.
The Stars added a run in the bottom on third to take a 4-2 lead.
Stephens then broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run inning. During the inning, Sarah Dooley, Kane, and Emma Steele each scored, handing Stephens a 7-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Cottey pieced together a two-out rally, as Alyssa Jones singled, followed by a Tara Holland walk. With two on and two outs, Samantha Batchelder singled to right field, scoring Jones and advancing Holland to second. Holland later scored on a Stars error, cutting the deficit to 7-4.
Stephens tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth to go on top 8-4, and added three more in the bottom of the sixth, for the final seven run margin.
For Cottey, Batchelder was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Jones 2-for-4 with a run, while Ciera Wong, Lauren Shepherd, and Hill each notched a hit apiece. Hill also stole a base and scored a run.
Batchelder pitched five innings, yielding seven earned runs on nine hits, while striking out two and walking three.
Arreola-Kern pitched one inning of relief, allowing three earned runs off four hits and two walks.
For Stephens, Miranda Carlisle had a big game, going 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored, while also striking out seven Comets in five innings of work, on her way to picking up the victory.
Game 2 (5 innings)
Comets starting pitcher Batchelder, pitching in back-to-back games, was roughed up early in the nightcap, allowing 10 earned runs on 10 hits in the bottom of the first inning.
Cottey was again tasked with facing Carlisle, who picked up right where she left off in her previous outing. Carlisle was dominant, allowing only two hits in five innings, while fanning five Comets.
For Cottey, Jones and Katherine Brockus each went 1-for-2.
Cheyenne Jones and Katie Heaton combined to go 7-for-8 at the plate with five RBIs.
Carlisle was the winning pitcher.
