A group of Vernon County residents gathered on the south lawn of the Vernon County Courthouse Thursday despite the occasional rainfall in honor of the National Day of Prayer, which was adopted in the United States in 1952.

"What a privilege this is to gather in a public forum without disturbance," said Scott Buerge, president of Metz Bank, expressing his and the other speakers gratitude to the county commissioners for permitting the use of the courthouse lawn for the event.

Pastor Rick Thompson of Cornerstone Baptist Church leads attendees in prayer during the National Day of Prayer event held Thursday.

Area pastors and business leaders led the attendees in prayer for Vernon County, Nevada, the United States, pastors, churches, governmental authority, families and concerning current issues such as abortion and same-sex marriages.

"I hope you are inspired to lead a stronger Christian life," Gray Clark of Watchman Outreach Ministries said in closing.

Those attending read Scriptures and sang, led by Pastor Chad Bailey of Pine Street Baptist Church. A breakfast was provided earlier in the morning at First Christian Church, while attendees were also invited to a lunch after the noon ceremony.
