Animal Shelter to hold drawing for cat adoptions

Cats and kittens such as these adopted in the month of August will be put into a drawing for a free spay or neuter.

Throughout the month of August, Vernon County residents interested in adding a pet to their family can adopt a cat or kitten and be entered into a drawing for a free spay or neuter to be awarded at the end of the month.

"We've just had a lot of cats and kittens lately," Lori Baldwin of the Nevada Animal Shelter said, adding that fact led to the shelter's decision to hold their first Cat Days of Summer special for an entire month.

Baldwin said they currently have about 22 cats and kittens at their three clinics, as it is their peak "kitten season" because of the number of cats in the community having kittens, which are then dropped off at the shelter.

"We always have a lot of cats and kittens during this time of year," Baldwin said.

Baldwin said they had two adopted last week but still have two litters of kittens on hand in need of a home. While the shelter has never had this type of special before, Baldwin said they saw it as a way to encourage members of the community to consider adoption.

Those interested in adopting any of the shelter's feline residents can come to the shelter and fill out the necessary paperwork, pay a $25 fee, accept a receipt for the vaccination record and select their new pet. If their name is drawn at the end of the month, a $20 refund will be given to them.
