Hume Lady Hornets race to 3-0 start

The Hume Lady Hornets basketball team defeated Ballard and then Sheldon to move to 3-0 overall (3-0 Golden Valley Vernon County Conference).

Hume toppled Ballard 45-29 Dec. 1 at home for its second win of the season. The Lady Hornets led 14-3 after one quarter of play and 23-10 at halftime. Hume outscored Ballard 11-7 in the third quarter to open up a 17 point lead as they cruised to the 16-point victory.

"It was definitely not our best game," Lady Hornets head coach Delayna Thompson said. "We came back a little sloppy after the break. We did play a lot better in the second half."

For the Lady Hornets, forward Megan Sutcliffe finished with a game-high 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Point guard Brhett Mumma finished just one steal short of triple-double, with 10 points, 12 rebounds, nine steals, and five assists.

Also for Hume, Karlee Metcalf contributed seven points, four assists, two rebounds, and a steal; Hannah Gorda six points, three rebounds, and an assist; Anna Spencer, two points and six rebounds; Hannah Swickhamer, two points, three steals, three assists, and a rebound; and Michala Lantsberger, one rebound.

Vs. Sheldon

The Lady Hornets knocked off the Sheldon Lady Panthers 45-23 Dec. 3 at home, improving to 3-0 overall and in GVVC-play. Hume led 13-7 after the first frame and 24-11 at halftime.

"We were working on a different defense and a little rough in the first half," Thompson said.

Hume outscored Sheldon 14-4 in the third quarter as they pulled away for the 22-point victory.

"We played a little better in the second half," Thompson said. "They work hard and I am very proud of their effort."

For Hume, Mumma finished with a game-high 14 points to go along with eight rebounds, five steals, and three assists.

Sutcliffe finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal; Kaiyah Kaiser 10 points; and two steals; Swickhamer, five points, two assists, one steal and one rebound; Spencer, two points, four rebounds, and two steals; Gorda, two points and three rebounds; Metcalf, four assists, two rebounds, and one steal; Emmah Fillpot, five rebounds and one point; while Malia McFrederick chipped in with an assist and Katlyn Brooks a steal.
