George Douglas Campbell, 64, Nevada, Mo., departed this life on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, at Freeman West Hospital, in Joplin, Mo., following a yearlong battle with health issues. Doug was born Dec. 19, 1951, in Lyons, Kan., to George Burris and Viola Ann (Barkow) Campbell. On Aug. 2, 1975, he was united in marriage to Judith G. Flickinger in Pretty Prairie, Kan., and she survives of the home.

Doug was raised in Lyons, Kan., and graduated from Lyons High School Class of 1969. Following high school Doug attended Hutchison Kansas Junior College for a time before going to the University of Arkansas on a basketball scholarship where he was a team starter for two years. He then attended Emporia State University where he received his teaching degree. Following his marriage, he and Judy came to Nevada in 1975 and Doug began employment as a teacher at the Nevada State Hospital.

During his career he also taught at Metz and Walker, coaching athletics at both schools. He later returned to the Nevada Habilitation Center retiring from there in 2005. Doug was an avid golfer and could frequently be found on the Nevada City Golf Course.

In addition to his wife, Judy, he is survived by his children, Greg Campbell, Overland Park, Kan., Bryan Campbell, Overland Park, Kan., and Erin Morris and her husband, Dusty, Nevada; one grandson, Kalen; two granddaughters, Avery, and Chloe; one brother, Donald Campbell and his wife, Janice, Overland Park, Kan.; one sister, Sharen Garcia and her husband, Tony, Nevada; and several nieces, aunts, uncles cousins, and his many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 29, at the United Methodist Church, in Nevada, with the Rev. Sharon Freeman officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Nevada High School Athletics or Vernon County Cancer Relief (in honor of his granddaughter, Avery Morris) in care of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
