Golden Valley hoops tournament underway in Sheldon
The Golden Valley Vernon County Conference boys and girls basketball tournaments tipped-off opening-round play Monday evening at Sheldon High School.
The first matchup of the night was in the girls tournament, featuring the second-seeded Hume Lady Hornets against the No. 7 Montrose Lady Blujays. The Lady Hornets rolled to a 63-29 victory, as point guard Brhett Mumma finished with a game-high 20 points, followed by forward Megan Sutcliffe with 17, Hannah Swickhamer eight, Emmah Fillpot eight, and Hannah Gorda four.
In the evenings second matchup, No. 4 seed Miami took on the fifth-seeded Northeast Vernon County Knights, with NEVC prevailing 40-32. Lady Knights freshman Makinsey Conner had a big performance, finishing with 19 points, while knocking down 7-of-11 from the charity stripe. Senior Becky Jennings contributed nine points, and freshman Hannah Rogers five.
The evenings final matchup was on the boys side, as the fourth-seeded NEVC Knights squared off against the host Sheldon Panthers ---- with Sheldon trumping NEVC 40-32.
The Panthers led 25-11 at halftime and 35-18 entering the fourth quarter, winning by a final score of 38-25. For Sheldon, Kaleb Martin tallied a game-high 12 points, Matt Bogart nine, Zavery Lamb eight, Brett O' Connor four, Alex Hibbitts three, and Clayton Loyd two.
For NEVC, freshman Blane Jones scored a team-high 10 points, Trenton Rader seven, while Ty Davis and Jacob Hazel added three each.
