Nevada golf wins second consecutive event
The Nevada Tigers cruised to a 33-stroke victory over Butler in a non-conference golf match Tuesday at Frank E. Peters Municipal Golf Course. Nevada followed up with a Thursday-evening victory over Pleseant Hill and host Oak Grove at Country Creek Golf Course just north of Harrisonville.
The back-to-back victories improve the Tigers to 5-0 in event-play this season. In addition, the Tigers have finished first place as a team in two tournaments, second in one, and fourth-place at Twin Hills in Joplin.
Against Butler, the Tigers carded a combined team score of 152, while Butler finished in a distant second-place at 185.
The Tigers also had the top four individual scores, with junior John Quitno firing a 1-under-par 35 on the back-nine.
"They all played pretty solid," Nevada golf coach Brian Leonard said of his squad. "They're not always hitting the ball well, but they're putting up good scores. During competition, if they're not hitting the ball well, but scoring ---- they can still come out in good shape."
At the Oak Grove match, Leonard said he was impressed with junior Patrick Ferry's second-place finish ---- his best outing of the season.
"Patrick has been hitting the ball well all season," Leonard said, "but he was really focused out there today."
As a team, the Tigers shot a combined score of 159, while Pleasant Hill took second-place at 167. Oak Grove finished 49 strokes back of Nevada with a 208.
