Season champions crowned at I-49 Speedway
The final points night of the season took place Sept. 17 at I-49 Speedway as track champions were determined and crowned.
Nevada's Jaren Powrie collected two feature wins on the season, and with his perfect attendance, took home the Pure Stock division championship. Republic's Bob Barnett bagged five feature wins throughout the season en route to laying claim to the Street Stock championship. John Willard of St. Joseph netted five victories to win the Mini Stock championship.
Devin Crockett of Lamar flew to four feature first place finishes, securing the Midwest Mod division championship. Liberal's Matt Rose walked away with the B-Mod championship, earning three feature wins, while Dustin Mooneyham of Verona swept the Late Model division track champion, winning a grand total of six races this season.
---- Mini Stocks ----
All eyes were on Springfield's Grayson McKiney as he led every lap of the Mini Stock feature, collecting his fourth win of the season while finishing a strong second place in the final point standings. Scoring his best position of the season, Daniel Long of El Dorado Springs sped into the runner-up position, moving up two spots from his original starting position.
After battling with Long, Mike Baxter of Sheldon settled for third. Track champion Willard slotted into the fourth position, while Ken Leverich of Joplin rounded out the top five.
---- Pure Stock ----
Nevada's own Powrie would not only claim to the track championship, but also bagged the feature win Saturday after holding off a major challenge from Josh Parcell of Joplin, who finished in the runner-up spot. Zach Hendren of Nevada slid into the third place position after starting fifth. The hard charger award went to Fort Scott's Tiny Joles, who has raced at the I-49 Speedway for over 40 years. Joles surged from his back row starting position of 11th, all the way up to fourth. Norman Mackley, also of Fort Scott placed fifth.
---- Street Stocks ----
Similar to the Pure Stock division, Barnett secured the Street Stock championship with a feature win. After beginning the race with pole position, Larry Ferris of Kansas City made a late push for the lead, but instead had to settle for second place.
Weekly competitor Mike Bitner of Frontenac, Kan., netted third, while Bobby Brown of Hume nailed down a fourth place finish. Also of Hume, Charles Brown coasted into fifth place.
---- Midwest Mods ----
Taking home the feature win along with the track championship, Crockett of Lamar moved up from his No. 3 starting position to net the feature win, his fourth of the season. Cayden Campbell of Nevada placed second (this being only his third time in a Midwest Mod). Osceola's Larry Drake battled with Campbell but fell short, finishing in the third spot.
After being idle for a couple of weeks, Billy Schlobohm of Nevada returned to score a fourth place finish. Clayton Brown of Hume grabbed fifth.

Another driver who not only earning the track championship, but also paid a visit to victory lane, was Liberal's Rose. After starting with outside pole position, Rose took full advantage, leading wire-to-wire as he flew the checkers. Tim Phillips of Fort Scott pressed Rose for the lead, but ended up with a strong second place finish. Phillips had earlier won his heat race.
The hard charger in this race was Kris Jackson of Lebanon, who moved up eight spots for a third place finish. Weekly competitor Jerry Morgan of Fort Scott settled for a solid fourth place finish, while Neosho's Levi Phillips zoomed into fifth place.
---- Late Models ----
Collecting his third consecutive win and his sixth of the season, Mooneyham would fly the checkers. Dylan Timmerman of El Dorado Springs locked up his best finish of the season, earning the runner-up spot. Craig Wood, also of El Do, placed third. Rob, Hail, who hails from El Do as well, advanced one spot from his original starting position to grab fourth place. Willard rounded out the top five.

Nevada's I-49 Speedway is down to its final event of the 2016 season, with the Fall Brawl scheduled for tonight, as Hot Laps are slated to begin at 6:45 p.m.
All six divisions will be racing for prize money with a special $500 purse going to the Midwest Mod winner, while $1,000 will go to the B-Mod winner.
The speedway is located a half-mile south of Burger King on Barrett Street.
