Tigers place 4th at Monett team competition
The Nevada Tiger swim team collected a fourth-place finish at the nine-team Monett team competition held Tuesday at the Monett YMCA. Host Monett won the meet, with Carthage placing runner-up and Joplin finishing in third.
For Nevada, freshman Ben Hines set a school record in the 200 yard individual medley, placing first, while clocking a time of 2:07.88. Hines topped the previous NHS mark of 2:10.19, set by Jesse Claypool in 2014. Other top finishes for the Tigers, included Grant Miller’s third-place finish in the 50 freestyle, with the sophomore zooming to a time of 25.16. Fellow sophomore Kalen Morris placed third in the 100 backstroke (1:09.29) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (58.63).
Hines placed fourth in the 100 butterfly, with an official time of 59.18. Meanwhile, the Tigers placed third in the 200 medley relay (1:59.56); fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.72) and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:43.69). “We had a decent showing,” said NHS swim coach Clayton Wheeler, “with a few guys (Jack Niestrath, Braden Russell, Morris and Miller) dropping big amounts of time in races.”
