Palmer punches ticket to Class 1 State golf tourney
Nevada High School junior Grace Palmer, carded a 102 at Monday’s Class 1 Sectional 2 Golf Tournament at Frank E. Peters Municipal Golf Course in Nevada — finishing in a three-way tie for 12th-place to earn a trip to the upcoming Class 1 State Golf Tournament in Columbia.
Also vying for a trip to the state tournament, were Lady Tiger seniors Mandy Crews and Lily Quitno. Crews missed the cut by one stroke, finishing with an 18-hole score of 103, while Quitno concluded her prep golf career with a 120.
Logan-Rogersville H.S. and Mt. Vernon took the top two team spots, earning bids to the state tournament.
The low individual score was carded by Springfield Catholic’s Kayla Pfitzner, a 6-over-par 78. Rounding out the top three individual scores, were Seneca’s Maggie Moore (79) and Purdy’s Zoe Brown (83).
Nevada head golf coach Brian Leonard, said he thought Crews was pressing Monday.
“I think Mandy was trying too hard,” said Leonard. “She only missed it by one stroke.”
Leonard said he discussed with his squad prior to the event, that the target score to qualify for state was likely 95-100.
Palmer is the first Lady Tigers since Hannah Householder in 2014 to qualify for the state tournament.
“Grace had some good holes and some bad holes, and just kind of squeaked in there with the last entry,” said Leonard. “Lily really struggled as the weather got hotter and the winds picked up.”
Added Leonard: “I was pleased with Grace and Mandy’s play. And of course, Lily, she fought through the hot weather and had a good attitude about it and finished up the 18 holes.”
As the host school, Leonard said he was happy with the way the event unfolded.
“I was very pleased with it,” said the veteran coach. “I don’t think we had any rules issues.”
