Roses bloom in victory lane: Father, son duo victorious at Nevada Speedway
A father and son duo from Liberal found victory lane Saturday night at Nevada Speedway, with Broc Rose taking the Pure Stock feature, while his father Matt, found victory lane in the B-Mod division. In addition, the speedway faithful were treated to a special night — with the Pure Stock division hitting the track in remembrance of Bob Ashley, a long-time supporter of the local dirt oval.
Just prior to the 15-lap feature, Pure Stock division drivers joined together, carrying an American flag around the track in honor of Ashley. “It was a beautiful and special sight to see the drivers do this,” said Jerry Davis, who is affiliated with Nevada Speedway.

Showcasing his skills on the dirt oval, Broc Rose parlayed outside pole position into a dominant wire-to-wire first-place finish, taking home the special prize.
Knocking on Rose’s doorstep, Matthew Hendren mounted a strong challenge, with the Nevada-native ultimately slotting into the runner-up spot. Meanwhile, current speedway points leader, Thomas Dunham of Carl Junction, ascended five sports from his original starting position to finish third. Rounding out the top five finishers, were Zach Hendren (fourth) and James Leiber (fifth).
— B-Mods —
Just prior to his son (Broc) parking his Pure Stock ride in victory lane, the elder Rose followed suit with a first-place finish in the B-Mod division, as Matt Rose sailed into the top spot. Matt Rose’s wire-to-wire masterpiece was the veteran racer’s fifth speedway victory of the season.
Achieving his best finish of the season, Neosho’s Levi Phillips zoomed to the runner-up spot. Meanwhile, pole-sitter Rusty Skaggs, of Fort Scott, placed third; while fellow Fort Scotian Jerry Morgan, weaved through the field to grab fourth. Tim Phillips, also of Fort Scott, topped off the top five finishers.
— Mini Stocks —
Just two cars managed to complete the 15-lap Mini-Stock feature, with several caution flags dropping. Pole-sitter Steve Bunton, of St. Joseph, emerged in victory lane, claiming his eighth feature victory of the season. Fellow St. Joseph native, John Willard, made a strong run at Bunton, before being relegated to second-place. Although Bunton and Willard were the only competitors to finish all 15 laps — David Miller was scored as third; Sheldon’s Mike Baxter, fourth; and Cody Gilbertson, fifth.
— Street Stocks —
All eyes were on Shawn Hendren in the Street Stock feature, as the Nevada driver secured his sixth victory of the season, dazzling the speedway crowd after starting with pole position. Fellow Nevadan, Karl Lehman, collected a runner-up finish, with only eight points separating him from Hendren for the division points lead. Frontenac’s Mike Bitner scored a third-place finish, while Butler’s Dale Douty took fourth. Rounding out the Street Stock top five was Buddy Owens, of Joplin.
— Midwest Mods —
Nevada High School senior Cayden Campbell weaved through the field en route to his second Midwest Mod division feature win of the season. After opening in the sixth spot, Campbell utilized the high-side portion of the track to his advantage, zooming past pole-sitter Devin Crockett for the win. Crockett, of Lamar, sped to a second-place finish.
The evening’s “Hard-charger award” went to Osceola’s Larry Drake, who advanced eight positions, netting third. Making his inaugural 2017 trip to Nevada Speedway, Bolivar’s Dillon McCowan scored a fourth-place finish, while Fort Scott’s
Keith Bradley crossed the finish line in fifth.
— A-Mods —
A new face emerged in victory lane Saturday night, with Archie’s Matt Johnson triumphing in the A-Mod division, after opening the feature in the fourth position.
Another new face to the speedway this season, Jesse Folk, of Iola, Kan., claimed the runner-up spot, while Raymore’s Nick Pence coasted into third. Placing fourth was Joplin Kyle Thompson, while division points leader, Jessy Willard, placed fifth.
— Late Models —
Fresh off last weekend’s victory in the 30-lap Late Model Special, Dustin Mooneyham kept the momentum going, earning his second consecutive victory in the division. After starting third, Mooneyham engaged in a side-by-side battle with Joplin’s Steve Johnson. Mooneyham’s late pass left Johnson with a second-place finish, while Webb City’s Mark Daye collected third. Unable to take full advantage of pole position, El Do’s Dylan Timmerman fell back three spots for the fourth-place finish. In his first Late Model race of the season, Craig Wood, also of El Do, cruised into fifth-place.
