Tournament week: Lady Hornets top Calhoun, Bronaugh bested by Dadeville, 37-30
The top-seeded Hume Lady Hornets throttled No. 8 seed Calhoun Monday, 56-25 in the opening round of the Appleton City Tournament. Meanwhile, the No. 7 seed Bronaugh Lady Wildcats fell to Dadeville, 37-30 on Monday in the opening round of the 62nd annual Golden City Basketball Tournament.
Hume 56, Calhoun 25
Little changed from Friday, when the Lady Hornets crushed visiting Calhoun, 58-25 in a non-conference home contest.
In Monday’s opening round contest, the Lady Hornets seized control from the outset, with Hume going on top 22-5 at the conclusion of the opening frame, and 36-18 at halftime.
Hume then used a 15-2 third quarter blitz to open up a 51-20 lead through three quarters as the Lady Hornets cruised to victory.
Hume (9-2) was led by junior forward Hannah Gorda, who concluded with a game-high 14 points, while Anna Spencer joined the double-figure scoring club with 11. In addition for Hume, Emmah Fillpot and Karlee Metclaf chipped in with 7 points apiece.
The Lady Hornets move on to the tournament semifinals, where they square off with the winner of Tuesday evening’s matchup between NEVC and Chilhowee, with tip off slated for 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Note: Tuesday results were unavailable as of press time
Dadeville 37, Bronaugh 30
In opening round action Monday at the Golden City tourney, the Lady Wildcats led 8-6 after one quarter, but trailed 21-19 at the break.
Bronaugh went back in front prior to the third quarter horn, taking a 26-25 lead entering the fourth. The Lady ’Cats, however, were unable to spring the upset, as Dadeville closed out the contest on 12-4 run to secure the 37-30 victory.
Bronaugh made 14-of-44 shots from the field (31 percent), while Dadeville connected on 10-of-33 (30 percent). Dadeville held a big advantage at the charity stripe, knocking down 13-of-18 free throws, while Bronaugh hit just 2-of-6. Meanwhile, the Lady ’Cats outrebounded Dadeville 20-19, but had 15 turnovers to Dadeville’s 5.
Bronaugh freshman guard Bailey Cliffman finished with a team-high 10 points on 5-of-12 shooting, while forward Riley Knapp corralled a game-high 8 rebounds. For Dadeville, Ashton Neely recorded a game-high 16 points to go along with 6 rebounds.
The Lady ’Cats (2-10) face No. 6 seed — and tournament host Golden City in the consolation semifinals, set for 5 p.m., today.
