Tuesday, May 1, 2018

In a high-scoring baseball affair, the Sheldon Panthers defeated the Bronaugh Wildcats, 22-12 — Friday night in Sheldon.

The regular-season finale — Golden Valley Vernon County Conference victory, moved Sheldon to 2-8 overall, and 2-3 in GVVC-play — while Bronaugh dropped to 0-9 overall, and 0-4 in GVVC-play.

In search of their first victory of the season, Bronaugh led 3-1 at the conclusion of the first. The Wildcats then erupted in the second, plating seven runs, en route to a 10-1 advantage.

The Panthers, however, clawed back, but still trailed 12-10 entering the home-half of the fifth. With victory well within Bronaugh’s reach, the contest suddenly turned into a five-inning run-rule, as Sheldon plated 10 runs in the fifth, securing the victory.

“I was really proud of how the team overcame a 10-3 deficit after the second inning,” said Sheldon head coach Matt Beatty. “We kept putting the bat on the ball and chipping away at the lead. I hope we can continue to hit the ball well, as we move closer to our district games.”

For Sheldon, junior Jason Leavell finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored — while freshman Isaac Hall went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
