Hume upended by Rich Hill in district-tourney
The Hume Lady Hornets’ volleyball season came to a close with a three-set loss in the semifinals of the Class 1 District 10 Tournament in Adrian on Wednesday.
The third-seeded Lady Hornets knocked off sixth-seeded Ballard in opening-round action Tuesday. The Lady Hornets took the first set 25-17, and then steamrolled to a 25-7 second-set triumph. For Hume, senior outside hitter Hannah Gorda tallied a team-high eight kills, to go along with a block and an ace — while Katlyn Brooks collected a team-high four aces.
In Wednesday’s semifinal contest against second-seeded Rich Hill, the Lady Hornets found themselves down 1-0 after dropping the first set 25-18. Hume then staved off elimination with a second-set (25-21) victory. Rich Hill, however, stung the Lady Hornets with an emphatic 25-10 third-set victory.
Hume stat leaders for the match included Gorda, with five kills and three aces — while Deborah Yarick chipped in a pair of kills and an ace.
The loss concludes Hume’s season at 14-9-1 overall. The victory over Hume advanced Rich Hill to the championship match, where they were dispatched by juggernaut Adrian High in two sets.
