Comets fall to Lincoln by 13, slip to 0-11

LINCOLN, Ill. — A 12-day hiatus failed to remedy the Cottey Comets’ ills, as a 70-53 road loss to Lincoln University on Saturday (Jan. 20) moved them to 0-11 on the season.

Cottey stayed within striking distance early, but was then outscored 24-7 in the second quarter, and trailed 46-22 at the break. Lincoln cooled off considerably in the second half, with the Comets trimming their deficit from 24 to 17 entering the fourth. From there, Lincoln was able to maintain its double-digit lead the remainder of the way, eventually winning by 13.

“We played really well for about the last quarter and a half,” said Cottey head coach Stephanie Beason. “Unfortunately, it took a teammate getting injured for everyone to get on the same page, and find consistent energy to finish up the game.”

Kelsey Acton paced the Comets with a game-high 19 points. The 5-foot-8 junior guard from Traverse City (Mich.) concluded 9-of-20 from the field (1-6, 3Pt.). As a team, Cottey shot just 18 percent (3-of-16) from the beyond arc, and 40 percent overall (24-of-60) from the field. Additionally, Cottey committed 21 turnovers to Lincoln’s 12, and was also out-rebounded by a 42-37 margin.

“On a positive note, we were able to score more points in transition,’ said Beason, adding, “(that) has been a focus during our break (in) play over the last week.”
