Comet softball sweeps Stephens College, off to 3-1 start
The Cottey Comet softball team continued their sizzling start to the season, notching an impressive twinbill sweep of Stephens College Sunday in Springfield.
In what was supposed to be a home contest for the Comets, the double-dip was relocated to Springfield due to weather-related concerns.
Cottey (3-1) rolled to a pair of five-inning run-rule victories — dispatching Stephens 15-0 in the opener, and then taking the nightcap, 8-0. Making her 2019 debut, Cottey sophomore-ace Kirsten Wallace spun three shutout innings in the opener en route to the victory, while freshman Kendalyn Roesner recorded two scoreless innings of relief-work.
Wallace (2-0) then tossed a five-inning complete-game shutout in the nightcap. Cottey’s pitching duo was so dominant, in fact, Stephens was only able to get a runner in scoring position once between the two contests.
Offensively for Cottey, Oklahoma native Cailin Fluty had a monster day at the dish. Fluty concluded 3-for-4 with five runs scored, two walks, a pair of stolen bases and a hit-by-pitch — while reaching base safely a half-dozen times. Cottey freshman Morgan Gamboa chipped in a 2-for-3, three RBI (game one) performance — while shortstop Katie Fernandez finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
In addition to her five shutout innings in game two, Wallace aided her own cause with a pair of base-knocks, while fellow infielders Lindsey Boord and Jen Cruse helped pad the Comets’ cushion via their plate appearances.
The Comets also backed up Wallace and Roesner in the circle with stellar defense, having not committed a single error on the day.
