County softball teams fall in district-tournament play
After suffering losses in district-tournament play, area softball teams had their seasons come to a close this week,
After notching one of their best regular-seasons in recent memory, the Hume Lady Hornets were upended by the Archie Whirlwind, 10-5, in the semifinals of the Class 1 District 13 Tournament, Wednesday in Adrian.
With the contest knotted 3-3 entering the fifth, the Whirlwind broke the game open with a five-run frame, and led, 8-3. Hume sophomore Kennidi Harris went the distance, tossing 101 pitches, 73 for strikes, while fanning five across seven frames of work.
Prior to the semifinal clash, Hume knocked off Miami-Drexel, 16-0, in opening-round play (April 29).
Hume’s only two losses this season came at the hands of Archie, as the Lady Hornets concluded the spring campaign — 11-2 overall.
Also in the district 13 tourney, NEVC (6-8) edged Ballard, 9-8, in opening-round play, and was then knocked off by host Adrian, 23-1, in the semifinals Wednesday.
In the Class 1 District 12 Tournament, the Bronaugh Lady Wildcats advanced from opening-round play after Stockton forfeited the matchup. In the semifinals Thursday, Bronugh (2-8-1) fell to Jasper, 17-0 .
Also in the District 12 tourney, Sheldon (0-6) forfeited their opening-round matchup to top-seeded (host) Liberal.
