Griffons battered for 20 runs, fall to St. Joe's, 20-16

Coughing up 20 runs in a baseball game is typically an insurmountable obstacle.

This was the case for the Nevada Griffons on Saturday, as they were upended 20-16 in a MINK League road-clash with the St. Joseph Mustangs.

The loss moves Nevada to 3-7 overall.

With the contest even at six-apiece through two innings, the Griffons exploded for eight runs in the third — as eight hits and a quartet of Mustang errors resulted in a commanding 14-6 Nevada advantage.

The eight-run cushion was erased the following inning, as St. Joe's gave new Griffons' addition Treviz Brown a rude welcoming to the MINK League. In his debut appearance with the Griffons, Brown was rocked for 16 runs (13 earned) and 14 hits, while walking six across 3 2/3 innings of work.

The offensive onslaught was highlighted by St. Joe's 10-run fourth, in which Brown was knocked from the contest. The Mustangs then tacked on a run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and another in the seventh, and led 20-14.

Nevada chipped into the deficit in the ninth, with a Clint Allen run-scoring double, and Dom Hernandez RBI-sacrifice fly accounting for the final four-run margin.

At the dish Griffons' catcher Griffin Larsen finished 2-for-5 with four RBI, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Allen, meanwhile, concluded with a 3-for-5 three RBI performance, to go along with two runs and a stolen base.

Nevada was then set to return to the diamond on Sunday, but the Griffons MINK South division matchup with the visiting Joplin Outlaws was rained out. An exact date has not been set, but will be made up as a late-season doubleheader, according to Griffons' personnel.
