On My Own to hold ADA celebration event
On My Own Incorporated is slated to hold an event honoring the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Located at 428 E Highland Ave., festivities for the free event include a cookout, equipment and assistive technology demonstrations, community resources, exhibitors, and giveaways.
Additionally, Alliance Rehab and Medical Equipment will be providing free minor adjustments, repairs and washing of wheelchairs, power chairs and other equipment.
On My Own marketing and communication director Reyna Blakely discussed the importance of the free event.
"As an independent living center, we feel it is important to celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act annually," she said.
The act was signed into law in 1989 by former president George H.W. Bush, and prohibits the discrimination of people with disabilities, and guarantees they have the same opportunities as everyone else.
"Our hope is to help raise awareness about disabilities, while celebrating the advancements in independent living," Blakely said. "Those include helping our seniors find ways to safely age in place, and live successfully in their own homes, with home modifications and home automation devices."
Added Blakely: "Our goal is to provide awareness about the Americans with Disability Act, and answer any questions about independent living or the services we provide, as the area's independent living center.
With many gatherings being postponed or canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Blakely addressed the situation as it pertains to the event.
"Our number one priority is the well-being of our clients, staff and community members," she said. "We will be taking temperatures at the door, and have multiple eating areas set up. There will be face masks available for those who need them, and we have several sanitizing stations located throughout our office."
Summed up Blakely: "This event is completely free. We encourage everyone to join us anytime between 10-2."
