The Nevada Tiger Basketball team got their season underway Tuesday night with a home contest against the Pleasant Hill Roosters in Wynn Gym. The anticipation and expectations for this year’s Tiger Basketball team are high. This is a very talented team that will be lead by Logan Applegate.

The evening kicked off with a freshman contest. The first quarter was a back and forth quarter that ended in a 9-9 tie. The pace picked up in the second quarter. Nevada played an aggressive style of defense with their hands in the passing lanes resulting in several steals. They were also aggressive on the offensive end which lead to several free throws. Pleasant Hill was dominate on the boards which lead to a very close score at half, Nevada leading 21-17. The third quarter returned to defense and both teams had several turnovers but neither could pull away, Nevada led 27-25 after 3. Both teams, again, played hard in the final quarter but due to good free throw shooting Nevada was able to pull away and win by a final score of 39-33. The freshman TIgers looked athletic and worked well together as a team. Nevada was le by Brice Budd’s 21 points.

The JV contest was the second game of the night. The game started with Pleasant Hill winning the tip and hitting a quick three point shot. After a few traded empty possessions Nevada’s Trent Hallam hit a three of his own to tie the game. Pleasant HIll would go a run and jump out to a 13-6 lead but Nevada’s Cade Beshore would bring Nevada back within 5 with a layup as time expired in the first, Pleasant HIll led 13-8 after 1. The 2nd quarter was all Pleasant Hill who used timely 3 point shots to open up a 14 point lead at the half, 24-10. Despite the deficit Nevada came out aggressive in the 3rd quarter. They utilized a full court defense and put pressure on Pleasant Hill. Nevada’s defensive effort was high and they were able to cut into the Pleasant Hill lead as the Roosters led 35-24 at the end of the 3rd. The 4th quarter started again with Pleasant Hill in control but Nevada never quit and never backed down. Nevada pulled to within 5 at 40-35 with 1:55 remaining in the game. Nevada’s Cade Beshore would drive to the hoop and score making it 40-37 with about a minute left. The furious comeback would fall short however as Pleasant HIll would secure the victory 44-37.

The varsity contest got off to a quick start, Nevada’s Ben Hines won the opening tip and Logan Applegate would hit a deep three point basket to open the game. Nevada’s defense continued to lead to offense as Nevada jumped out to a 15-5 lead with 1:55 left in the quarter when Evan Rea would steal the ball and take it in for a layup. Logan McNeely would push the lead out even further when he would hit a three point basket giving Nevada an 18-5 lead, McNeely would then steal the ball and take it in for a lay up pushing the lead to 20-5. The Tigers displayed their defensive aggressiveness and toughness which turned into many good looks at the basket. Nevada started the 2nd quarter on fire. They would push the lead to 24-7 forcing Pleasant Hill to take a timeout. Nevada would continue to push the pace and the lead when Applegate would drive the lane and dish it off to Hines for 2 to make the score 30-9 with a little over 3 minutes left in the half. Applegate would drill another long 3 pointer to push the lead out to 38-13. After a made free throw for Pleasant Hill Evan Rea would hit a 3 pointer from the corner giving Nevada a 41-14 lead. On Nevada’s next possession Rea would drive the lane and drop the ball off to Hines who would score two on a dunk making the score 43-14. Nevada would close the half as it started it, Applegate would throw a cross court pass where Rea would hit another 3 pointer. Nevada would lead at the half 46-16. The second half started a little shaky for Nevada until Applegate would get a steal and dunk giving the Tigers a 48-18 lead. Nevada would continue both the defensive pressure and great shooting to extend the lead to 62-26 with 1:24 left in the 3rd quarter. The 4th and final quarter was a quick one. When a team is up by at least 30 points a turbo clock is in effect. That means the clock continues to run except for time outs. Nevada also used this quarter to get some younger players playing time. Nevada would end up winning the ball game 68-32 making Nevada’s home and season opener a success as they move to 1-0 on the year. Nevada as led on the night by Logan Mcneely’s 18 points followed by Logan Applegate with 15 and Evan Rea with 12.
