Cottey College flag football blown out in program's debut
Cottey College made history Sunday in Salina, Kan., when the flag football team played in its inaugural doubleheader against Kansas Wesleyan and Midland University.
The Comets are also hoping they got the program's worst-ever losses out of the way, as well.
Cottey fell 55-0 to the hosting Coyotes before dropping the nightcap, 88-0, to the Warriors.
The Comets put themselves in a 22-0 hole after the first quarter against Wesleyan and, despite dominating the time of possession, were unable to dig themselves out of it.
The Coyotes held Cottey to just three rushing yards as a team, although freshman Anna Marie Arce was able to run for 29 yards. Arce also led the Comets with 20 receiving yards. Fellow freshman Jennifer Haberstock threw for 66 yards.
Cottey's day only got worse against Midland, which hauled in nine interceptions — six of which were returned for touchdowns.
Haberstock threw for 88 yards in this one, with Arce logging 41 receiving yards and 32 yards on the ground.
Kansas Wesleyan scored 12 fourth-quarter points to come back and beat Midland in their game, 19-12.
Cottey will get another shot at Midland on Friday, when the Comets will also host Ottawa University. Kick-off of the first game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Logan Field.
